Welcome Message from the Vice President for Research

University research has transitioned from not only representing the major source of new knowledge
as a benefit to society, but also a responsibility of solving complex problems in a globally
connected population. To meet these challenges University research units have to develop partnerships
among university faculty, government research labs, and the private sector to more effectively meet
the challenges of a sustainable future and new economies. There is a new vision for research universities
that clearly articulates their role in 'commercializing knowledge' by strengthening innovation in new
technologies, new processes, new products, and new ideas.

The University Research Park in Lafayette and the faculty at UL Lafayette represent those assets
that need to be networked with industry to provide research, development and innovation to accomplish
these challenges. Today, some of the most successful regions with economic growth, and quality of life,
are those that capitalize on investments in research universities and associated research parks
(e.g. North Carolina, Georgia, Michigan, Illinois, and California).
The key success of these research parks is that they were developed and managed to represent
valuable functions in developing more 'mission oriented' research that transitions into solving
social problems in regional landscapes. Yet, these research universities also have to continue
the tradition of basic knowledge to create new ideas and preserve institutional memory critical to
innovation. Research universities are significant in these economic regions when they combine the best
attributes of two very distinct institutional cultures: generation of basic knowledge by universities,
and utility of knowledge to solve problems for economic development and the public good. Such regional
features that transfer knowledge into economic development (and quality of life) has been described as
the 'innovation ecosystem'.

UL Lafayette has a very creative faculty and effective research centers focused on specific challenges
to society through the following strategies: be engaged in interdisciplinary research that includes students;
develop solutions to real-world problems; and nurture, preserve and express the region's Cajun and Creole
cultures. We welcome you to explore the pages and linkages of our Research Office web site to appreciate the
unique research climate and regional culture that explains our excitement in developing the new research
university.
