Does it run from terminal or does it require X/Desktop environment?

I would like to run the whole app directly from the terminal, without launch X or maybe without even install X; or using some minimalist WM like Ranger and similar. Would Furnace run in this environment?

There are small devices that would be very well suited for running exclusively Furnace, like for example the UConsole or the DevTerm from ClockworkPi, to make small portable trackers that could be battery operated, kinda like the M8. Although if you need the whole environment with the desktop to run Furnace, that add bloat if all you want to run is this app, and also increase startup time to get immediately in the app.

yes. you can play modules with command line only, no x11/free desktop required.
but you do need jack2 and soundcard drivers.

What about running the interface? Can you run the whole app directly from an install that has no X server installed? Talking about installing something like a flat Debian text distro on a RPI and run Furnace to compose

You theoretically can run without X11 - just change SDL_VIDEODRIVER.
Be noted that Furnace does not have a text-mode interface other than the command-line player.

Make sense; I was not expecting a text mode interface, just that it would launch in its own SDL context without have to run the whole X server to launch it. So I assume the requirements would be just libsdl2-dev and Jack, if I start from a standard text-only distro of Debian for example?

JACK is optional as well. SDL audio will work fine.
