If I have 7 columns and a crib length of 4, then the max number of columns is 7 in accordance with the State/National rules.

But in the following example, it starts exploring the possibilities with 7 columns, seems to start getting close, and then abruptly quits and begins exploring possibilities of 11 columns before failing and throwing the pink error.

What I don't know is why it gave up on its 7-column work. It might be related to the bug I submitted this morning which you are probably working on, but I'm submitting it separately in case it's not, because the behavior is different and because on this problem, any work it's doing with 11 columns is extraneous under the current rule set.
