Is there a fix out there for the default thumbnail issue as of yet?

All of the thumbnails now display as so…

I've seen it occur across a few sites. Wordpress version is 5.4.4 and plugin is 1.1.5

I see - Quick solution is to hit refresh on the plugin button, the plugin fetches and adds the content to WP's DB.

The issue:
If for some reason the link to the image changes it would look broken until new data is fetched. I'm not sure the best way to automate this. Any thoughts are welcome. It's been running for years without this problem, I've seen it occurring once before last year, I think it was due to infrastructure updates.
