  • Device: OnePlus 5 (but probably all)
  • Channel: 20.04 Stable
  • Build: OTA-2

Two common problems that can be quite annoying when writing in French:

  1. Word suggestions and corrections don't work very well with accented words. Especially if you don't write accents. This is my case, and I think it's quite common, because leaving a key pressed to select the right accent is rather time-consuming and impractical. Besides, for the "à" which is stuck to the edge with azerty keyboard, I end up with a 1 every other time... In the end, you'd like the right accented word to be suggested to save time, but it doesn't appear. For example, write "depenalisation": "dépénalisation" is not suggested. And if you misspell a word for which you haven't added an accent, the spellchecker has a hard time suggesting an appropriate correction. For example, write "veteren": "vétéran" is not suggested. I took an iPhone to compare: with these two examples, there's no problem suggesting the right corrections as first choice.

  2. Apostrophes can cause a bug with the spellchecker that makes the article (l' or d') disappear. For example, if you write "d'experience", the spellchecker suggests "expérience"; clicking on the suggestion corrects the word but makes the article d' disappear. Once again, no problem with an iPhone (I'm not trying to advertise here, I just took what I had on hand to compare...).

indeed some improvement is needed there, the hard thing is that this can't be a general rule. Every language has its own syntax issues.
There is a work in progress to bring a Maliit 2 (https://maliit.github.io/) hope that it brings also better language support.
