This files describes steps required for installing the plane wave migration package
called pwmig.
1. Decide where you want to put the top level directory for this package.
The default is /opt/pwmig/XXX where XXX is a version number tag. This should
normally be in the user who will maintain this package's account and owned by
a regular user. I do not recommend this package be installed as root. If
other people need to use the package, make sure the directory you choose for the
installation is readable by others. You need to first create the install
directory.
2. Edit the file setup/setup.csh point to the top level directory
described in 1. This requires setting one internal variable in
setup.csh. The default line is this:
set BASE=/opt/pwmig
Edit this to point to your install location. For example, here is
what I used for the HPC machine called Karst at Indiana University.
set BASE=/N/u/pavlis/Karst/PWMIG
3. In the setup directory copy either pwmigmakefile.macos or
pwmigmakefile.linux to pwmigmakefile (i.e. without the .ext).
This will become the master setup file used for running make.
This file was derived from the antelope file called antelopemake
and is used in a comparable build system with make.
4. In the setup directory run
source setup.csh
make
This will create the directories required by the package and copy some
basic setup files.
5. This package has a mixed dependency on the antelope software
package supported commercially by Boulder Real Time Technologies
(www.brtt.com). Many programs in the package will not work without
it. However, because the core programs in the package (pwstack
pwmig, and gridstacker) faced issues in being portable to a wide
range of computing platforms they have been modified to work
without antelope libraries. The rest of this document focuses on
how to build libraries and the core pwmig programs. Programs
with antelope dependencies should be built as if they were part
of the antelope contrib directory chain (see documentation at
http://antelopeusersgroup.org).
Building the core pwmig programs:
1) You need to first download the current version of the
antelope contrib library from http://www.antelopeusersgroup.org.
Use either the git clone method described there or download
the latest tarball. Chose a convenient place to put the
contrib source code. If you will be using antelope the
standard place is $ANTELOPE/src. Otherwise I would recommend
something like ~/src.
2) Set the environment variable ANTELOPE_CONTRIB to the
top of the contrib source code tree.
For example (csh): setenv ANTELOPE_CONTRIB $ANTELOPE/src/contrib
would use the standard for sites with antelope.
3) You will need to manually transfer selected files from
antelope contrib to your PWMIG work area. Shells scripts are
found in two directories to do this. Assuming the current directory
is the same as that where this file is found type this set of
commands to build the required antelope libraries:
cd antelope/antelope_contrib/libgclgrid
./copy_libgclgrid_files
cd ../libseispp
./copy_libseispp_files
cd ../libseispp.ext
./copy_libseispp_ext_files
cd ../libperf
./copy_libperf_files
4) Installing this package requires mixing C and C++ include files
found in both antelope contrib and some components of antelope I converted
from the original open source version of datascope. This complicates
the build process because we have to install all of the include files
first before we compile anything. Assuming you ran the "source setup.csh"
command earlier this sequence of commands should do that:
Return to the top level directory for this repository (the one
where this file is located) and type:
cd antelope/dsap_conversion
make Include
cd $PWMIG/antelope_src
make Include
5) Once this is done we do a comparable thing with make install:
cd antelope/dsap_conversion
make install
cd $PWMIG/antelope_src
make install
Note the libttpp is presently broken. This file was retained because
there is still hope it can be fixed, but don't try to use this. It will
build but will not work.
6) At this point there are limits on what programs in this package
can be built without antelope and which require it. The primary
split is the directory found in the top level called pwmigcore. Only
programs in that directory will build without antelope. Most of the
rest of this package requires antelope libraries.
To build the 4 main programs that perform plane wave migration do
the following (again assuming the current directory is the same one
where this file is found):
cd pwmig/lib/libpwmig
make Include
make install
cd ../../pwmigcore
make install
This will put the plane wave migration codes in $PWMIG/bin.
7) To use the plane wave migration code tcsh/csh users should add these lines
to .cshrc or .tcshrc:
setenv PWMIG --top level directory of pwmig install --
source $PWMIG/setup.csh
bash and sh users will need to do some minor conversion to modify setup.csh
to work for bash/sh and create a comparable initialization.
8) The other programs in this package require antelope. There presently
no automated compile mechanism so these need to be installed as needed.
All these programs echo a usage line if the command is entered with no
arguments. Most have unix man pages.
In gclgrid:
extract_section - extracts an arbitrary line through an image volume.
extract_volume - converts an image volume to segy for use in petrel.
gaingrid - applies a specified gain and power factor to image volume
horizonstats - computes metrics on a GCLgrid define surface.
In paraview:
gclfield2vtk - converts a gclfield object to vtk format used by paraview
grdtodb - converts a GMT grd file to a surface (mainly used for topography)
vtk_gcl_converter - converts a range of types of data to files that can be
viewed with paraview in a scene with plane wave migration image volumes.
In pwmig:
Programs not in the pwmigcore directory mostly require antelope. An
important one is migsimulation, which is used for error appraisal by
creating simulations of a complete data set for several choices of
synthetic methods. migsimulation requires one to build the libsynthetics
library found in lib/libsynthetic. cd to that directory and type the
usual:
make Include
make install
This puts the libsynthetics.a static library in the standard antelope location
like antelope contrib.
The other programs under the pwmig directory are assorted utilities:
Under dataprep:
convert_ak135 - converts the stock text file for ak135 to an input file format
used by pwmig.
convertRTdata - used to convert RF data in Sac format computed in R and T
directions
db2pwstack - converter to take data stored in an antelope database and build
the input file format used by pwstack.
importpwmig - utility used to import a series of files produced by pwmig
to the database format used in antelope programs.
project1dmod - builds a 3d model from a 1D model file (depricated)
RFeventstacker and telecluster - and important pair of programs used to build
receiver side stacks. Telecluster builds a radial grid of control points
and links to events in the neighborhood of those control points.
RFeventstacker is run after telecluster to build composite events from
different source regions. See the man pages for both programs.
The EARS directory contains a suite of programs used to work with data
from the Earthscope Automated Receiver function Survey (EARS). If you
are interested in using these programs contact the author pavlis@indiana.edu.
