Please give examples of usage

For those of us who don't write code every day, it would be much appreciated if there are examples of how to use this... the help function really doesn't do much to explain it to the layman. Please add examples and more detailed instructions on how to use this. Please assume people know nothing.

That's a tricky one! Everyone's idea of "knows nothing" is different. The docs assume you understand the SNMP library and tools and Zabbix. Unfortunately, it's not a beginners tool.

The simpler I make the docs, the more assumptions I have to make about your setup, and the more support tickets I'll get when beginners aren't able to resolve the issues on their own. Unfortunately I don't have time to maintain this anymore and answer those tickets. That said, I want everyone to get value out of this tool.

If you are able figure things out, I'd welcome a PR to improve the docs.

@rafaelrs I think the person who wrote that link got it wrong...

Translate to template:
snmptranslate -Tz -m ./MIKROTIK-MIB.txt | mib2zabbix -o .1.3.6.1 -f ~/file.xml -e -G custom -N "Mikrotik auto" --disc-delay=60 --history=1 --trends=1

Not sure why he pipes output to mib2zabbix? It seems like he got it working by accident 😄

@cavaliercoder I think some basic usage examples could be useful. Then there could be a section about common problems that people have. For example I downloaded this tool and assumed it is going to do this -> This Perl script will generate a Zabbix v3 Template in XML format from an OID tree in a SNMP MIB file. But it does not really work with MIB files directly. One needs to get the MIBS where normal SNMP tools can find etc. In that sense, it would have been very useful suggestions to install snmp and snmp-mibs-downloader packages for example...

Then I had to set (which was not even mentioned in the conf file, it said just comment this line out...)

$ cat /etc/snmp/snmp.conf
mibs +ALL
$

Then things started working all of a sudden....
