why is the only way to save a file to close it? what if I want to edit more after saving? there needs to be a Save button and menu entry, and a Save as… menu entry and maybe button.

This is on Kaos, but I have the same issue on KDE Neon and Regata. There is no menu:

Hey @SarreqTeryx , menus on Linux hit Preview just two days ago via #21873 and should be in Zed Stable wednesday next week. So once you update your Zed in a week to 0.168.x, you should be good to go 😄
