*MOT: we're (.) my husband as I are curious about that .
*MOT: &u:m she kinda picked up her letters quite spontaneously and (.) I
*MOT: but she came home from her play group counting (.) one day .
*MOT: and I thought it was primarily because_of repetition she picked up
*MOT: (.) but (.) my husband and I are (.) wondering if she (.) doesn't
*MOT: now , today she didn't demonstrate that very well .
*MOT: but we saw her playing by herself one night (.) after he'd come
*MOT: we were talking in the kitchen , and she (.) just naturally sort of
*MOT: and she had some wooden spools and she had them (.) in a semicircle
*MOT: so my husband and I sort a [: of] observed her from the doorway and
*MOT: and he also wondered the same thing .
*MOT: we hadn't discussed it together .
*MOT: and he went out , and he asked her how many there were , and she
*MOT: he removed one , and he asked her how many there were , and she
*MOT: +" five .
*MOT: whereupon , we decided that (.) really , there was something
*MOT: so we've (.) y(ou) know , we've encouraged her to count (.) but , I
*MOT: y(ou) know , other than (.) being exposed to this book (.) which is
*MOT: I mean , I hadn't sat down and taught her (.) one , two , three !
*MOT: and neither had he , and neither had my daughter .
*MOT: and I've quizzed the babysitter , and she hadn't either , so (.)
*MOT: or if (.) if she's so fascinated (.) she lies and counts (.) by
*MOT: with pleasure .
*MOT: I mean , it gives her great pleasure to , to (.) count and (.) if
*MOT: or (.) give her an enviro(n)ment (.) that will (.) promote it .
*MOT: I see .
*MOT: well , today , obviously , I was trying to get her to , to (.) to
*MOT: and , she substituted that at one point , I think .
*MOT: the counting for the colors .
*MOT: I asked her how many , no I asked her what color the crayons were
*MOT: +" mother , get off my back !
*MOT: yes , she does .
*MOT: yes , she does amazing things with &u:m the flat wooden blocks ,
*MOT: she plays with occasionally (.) &-um , but (.) &re her babysitter
*MOT: and they are (.) incredibly wonderful .
*MOT: and she , every night , creates something with them .
*MOT: and , they are very interesting blocks .
*MOT: <they &s> [//] (.) they , they go perpendicular or (.) this way (.)
*MOT: she does not have a (.) toy telephone (.) and as a result , she
*MOT: and she does talk to her daddy (.) regularly .
*MOT: and occasionally her friends .
*MOT: my husband would not let me buy her one .
*MOT: because she had a doll on her (.) one crib machine (.) and he felt
*MOT: and I (.) acquiesced .
*MOT: I know it (.) was (.) still I think it's the principle of the thing
*MOT: and &-uh everybody has them (.) so (.) really she doesn't +...
*MOT: if we're working together (.) I sometimes volunteer it (.) for
*MOT: yes .
*MOT: she does have a play corner .
*MOT: and she doesn't run loose , she's very categorical about her toys ,
*MOT: no .
*MOT: she has a (.) small table , with a free standing chair .
*MOT: oh , no , that's in the kitchen actually .
*MOT: she does some work there .
*MOT: she has a standing up &cha [//] table in the , &u:m play area ,
*MOT: and &-uh , we cleaned it up , and it's [/] <it's beau> [//] she has
*MOT: with her (.) little (.) little people .
*MOT: she wanted to be there !
*MOT: oh yes , she's (.) she capable of climbing in and out_of (.) well ,
*MOT: and we hadta dismantle it and (.) put her in a youth bed .
*MOT: she has not been containable once she wants to get out_of something
*MOT: or into it !
*MOT: she's [//] she'll climb into her play+pen , if it's set up for
*MOT: and she's very capable of climbing !
*MOT: she knows all the animal sounds .
*MOT: I found it rather boring to go (.) y(ou) know , ask her to emote ,
*MOT: yes , because we've been to the (.) zoological , &u:h museum at
*MOT: oh , yes .
*MOT: and in pictures , she can identify from dress (.) which is the boy
*MOT: she goes to a playgroup with &-uh primarily girls , except one
*MOT: +" he's a little boy .
*MOT: to (.) it connotes (.) that he's always crying (.) but her friends
*MOT: but we've been talking about (.) big boys and big girls (.) little
*MOT: I don't think she has the concept .
*MOT: she has names for all her dolls , but we've named them (.) as they
*MOT: all [/] all her dolls and many of her animals (.) I don't know
*MOT: but she does understand names of people (.) she knows she knows
*MOT: both of those things , I'm sorry (.) the name I've been trying to

*MOT: when she's asked (.) and to ask another little friend of hers if

*MOT: and we've done this in the car , as a kind of exercise as_well_as

*MOT: we fool around with laces , but I haven't taught her how to tie .
*MOT: she's she's interested in watching me tie her shoes +...

*MOT: and she has one book that is like this book .

*MOT: and she loves that , with each little door +...
*MOT: yes , and she has been for a long time .
*MOT: that's one of the ways that we keep her busy .

*MOT: she calls everything juice (.) water (.) grape juice and milk are

*MOT: (.) no , she has her own , but it's a regular bowl .
*MOT: I don't think she (.) would ever say something (.) I think if she
*MOT: and I don't think she knows a shoe in a book as she does a shoe on
*MOT: <I don't> [/] I don't know where she [//] we don't have it , so
*MOT: (a)n(d) (.) she seemed to know right away to turn to the page with
*MOT: and she knew (.) she patted the bunny (.) which surprised me (.)
*MOT: it's possible , just because everybody has it , that she's seen it

*MOT: she has (.) &u:m a set of about fifty little blocks (.) and while I
*MOT: herself !
*MOT: and that [//] so that's something new that she xxx .
*MOT: they're not .
*MOT: she has gotten this thing about shoes in the last few weeks , and

*MOT: she has been around (.) no less than six or eight people a day for
*MOT: there wasn't too much in there that (.) looked familiar to me .
*MOT: from her experience .
*MOT: well , I think the milk she was saying milk at lunch today .

*MOT: well , she knows keys , but I don't know if she knows the word .
*MOT: and I think a_lot_of those things , apple that she would eat an

*MOT: she has her own little phone , an(d) all she says is hi and bye .
*MOT: when we call up someone , she'll pick her phone up while we're on
*MOT: hi and bye is it .

*MOT: she's talked to him on the phone , actually when he's in New York .
*MOT: and <she , well> [//] she doesn't talk to him .
*MOT: she just listens , and she knew it was him .

*MOT: daddy's doing tape recordings now too and she [//] we've got him on

*MOT: so , I'm sure she knew it was his voice on the phone .
*MOT: and she's talked to her grandma over the phone just , y(ou) know,
*MOT: she doesn't say anything to him except bye@q maybe at the end of it
*MOT: cats and dogs and mice ?

*MOT: birds ?
*MOT: elephants .
*MOT: Dumbo [=! laughs] All of xxx animals [=! laughs] Oh , yes .
*MOT: we have a little selection (.) these little plastic pigs and cows
*MOT: (.) she can say Moo@q for cow (.) I hafta take her to Drummond farm
*MOT: for that sort of thing .
*MOT: peter Magic (be)cause he has all these little magic things on him

*MOT: ah she could untie the laces .

*MOT: yeah , she doesn't do that , she has a zipper on a little case ,
*MOT: she really has (.) no desire to open it .

*MOT: she knows the difference between little boys and little girls (.)

*MOT: I [//] there were the kids who were at the age where their mommys

*MOT: we have the tulips growing outside and she helped me pick one the
*MOT: the daffodils just came out and the roses are starting to grow .

*MOT: yeah , with the flairs and with the ink pens and pencils , she'll
*MOT: I (.) haven't given her the crayons lately , maybe I should try
