Apparently at least some of my pages look like shite if run through google translate. Maybe this can make, for example, the font table in freesans-swl look good even after translation?
The main page should remain in Swedish, but all notes should be in English (for the benefit of an international audience). Link files from old to new names. (‘index.html’ should remain in Swedish.
Also, rename files to English titles, and add forwards from old to new page URL.
Si5s, Si5s v2, BSLwrite, JSLwrite, STSwrite etc.
The problem with the current handshape terminology is that it differs to much between languages and thus is hard to translate. Handshape names should be directly translatable from language to language, and thus should:
- NOT be based on fingerspelling names of handshapes (these differs too much between languages).
- Should use accepted terms as far as possible (i.e. borrow terms from others such as HamNoSys, Typannot, or SignWriting?)
- Maybe use medical terminology for thumb position?
- Have clear and unambiguous terms (i.e. if a term has been sloppily used historically, we should probably avoid it, or, [second best] defined it precisely).
This should use terms from Svenskt teckenspråkslexikon as far as possible, but also deviate from that when needed. (See https://teckensprakslexikon.su.se/verktyg/utskrift and https://teckensprakslexikon.su.se/lage.)
These concepts are good (but words might have to change):
- ‘utsträkt/rak’, ‘vinklad’, ‘böjd’ HamNoSys: ‘extended’, ‘flattened’ and ‘bent’ (HamNoSys also has ‘hooked’ indicating fingers are more bent than ‘bent’, e.g. in ASL ‘E’ handshape – do not occur in Swedish?)
- ‘spretad’ & ‘samlad’ HamNoSys: ‘spread’ & ‘nonspread’
- ‘stor’ (all secondary fingers straight) HamNoSys: ‘others extended’ (and ‘other extended spread’)
- ‘liten’ (only index and middle finger doing a thing ‘liten o-hand’) HamNoSys: ‘two fingers’
- ‘baby’ (only index finger doing a thing, ‘baby o-hand’) HamNoSys: ‘one finger’
Note that ‘stor’ and ‘liten’ (which are opposite adjectives in Swedish in general) not are opposites in this context. Maybe rename these? (e.g. ‘stor liten o-hand’ makes perfect sense).
- The word ‘finger’ does not include the thumb.
- One-finger handshapes should be ‘thumb’, ‘index finger’, ‘pinky’ and so on.
- Index finger is the ‘primary finger’, so if a handshape name is just a
number of fingers we start with the index finger and count towards the
pinky:
- ‘one finger’ = index finger (HamNoSys uses this),
- ‘two fingers’ = index and middle finger,
- ‘three fingers’ = index, middle and ring finger.
(Maybe see http://zrajm.github.devel/teckentranskription/NEWER/handform.html?)
See: https://www.sign-lang.uni-hamburg.de/dgs-korpus/files/inhalt_pdf/HamNoSys_Handshapes.pdf
Makes ‘böjd tumme’ (r)-kkkk possible, but then, what does ‘flat tumhand’ become?
In Clark’s [clark-2017-aslwrite_summary_3.pdf] the ‘J’ is written by with a ‘lying down’ pinky digit, indicating the final position of the hand. However, I wrote Swedish ‘Y’ using the initial hand position – change to indicate the final position.
When stopped the video should have a small play symbol in a circle to indicate that these are videos which can be played, and not just static images. This little video symbol should be placed bottom left (and NOT in the center of image, as that will obscure significant parts of the video preview).
There should be a play pause icon appearing when starting/stopping the video (just like there is in the lexicon).
The edge diacritic (in the ‘Fingrar’ chapter) is not described very well. Describe how it work in neutral space.
Also give concrete example of how to use it in combination with body positions?
Some signs that could benefit from this: https://teckensprakslexikon.su.se/ord/00789 ‘gammal’ https://teckensprakslexikon.su.se/ord/12312 ‘problem’ https://teckensprakslexikon.su.se/ord/00798 ‘fantasi’
(maybe ’fingerformer’?)

Maybe order by frequency of occurrence, based on corpus data?
(from Bergman’s grammatical compendium?)
For example relative clauses, interrogative sentences, rhetorical questions, statements

Name of cities (Stockholm + Uppsala, maybe?) photoshopped with text both in Swedish and sign language.
Should these be called ‘ihopgående’ or ‘sammangående’, to parallel ‘isärgående linjer’?
Since the source isn’t the complete official textbook, it would be worth mentioning.
Some of the handshapes and digits have ‘weird’ rotations/attitudes. Some of the digits have a different built-in attitude (e.g. ‘rak måtthand’, ‘A-hand’, ‘O-hand’, ‘klohand’ have different attitude than ‘sprethand’, ‘flat hand’, ‘4-hand’ etc.) which motivates a different attitude, but some are unmotivated rotations. Like maybe ‘amerikansk M-hand’, ‘amerikansk N-hand’? But definitely ‘M-hand’, ‘N-hand’, ‘pistolhand’ (which all should be pointing upwards).
Display a graph of the various handshapes pictures and their digits. Include a selector of which version to use (Arnold 2007, Clark 2013, Clark 2023, STSwrite etc.).
The point is to cluster thing by property and see how they lump together, and if the lumping of the digit properties is similar to that of the handshapes themselves.
This could be solved by having each hand photographed from both sides, and a symbol illustrating each of these hand positions. I.e. a photo of a Swedish E handshape from the palm side, and one from back of the hand (where thumb position isn’t visible), each illustrated with separate E hand digit.
There are several digits for which the orientation between the digit and its illustration differ. These should at least be marked in the table. When fixing this, also rewrite/remove the paragraph of text about this (a ‘Note:’ just before the table itself).
Examples are:
- American E KFFFF
- American open E kffff
- bent thumb (r)-kkkk
- Swedish M-hand/K-rrr-K/
Ideally this should be fixed by reorienting the illustration and/or the digit?
Klohand har bara ett extra fingerstreck, medan böjd 4-hand har två (för att distingera den från böjd W-hand). Kolla hur det ser ut i ASLwrite. Vad är rimligt i STS-skrift?
F-hand RFrrr and stor nyphand B-B-rrr
There’s not so much difference between flat and bent O-hand in ASL, while in STS it’s an important distinction – this affects the symbols of all the ‘large’ handshapes (U-hand, stor nyphand B-B-r-r-r och V-V-r-r-r).

- Why drop the break in the pinky line in r-kkk-r (flyghand A)?
Which posts are replies of which other posts is currently lost. Fix this! Also, one should be able to use anchor links to refer to a whole subthread, not just an individual post.
Is this digit only included in Tanada version 1? If so add version 1 to the reference (and link to it), and also add footnote about this.
Where index, middle (and ring) fingers are not straight but turned into a fist (with thumb protruding between index and middle fingers, or middle and ring finger).

The Swedish Sign Language Corpus have at least some annotations of reduced mouthings borrowed from Swedish. – I happened to stumble upon the annotation ‘(t)i(ll)ä(gga);tillägga’ (in tier ‘Kommentar_mun S2’ in file ‘sslc01_003.eaf’) – maybe there are more to be found?
Could this data help in cataloging all the mouthings borrowed from Swedish?
Write each reference in an appropriate form.
Are they the same with two different realisations? (I have yet to find a single source that describes them both with pictures, but one adverb (“‘normally’, ‘with ease’”) is described in ”A Preliminary Analysis of Visual Mouth Segments in Swedish Sign Language” as not being among the mouth segments there described – which the other realization of [m] looks like what they there describe as bilabial.
Have we drawn similar conclusions? Categorized the same mouth shapes as similar?
Useful data can be found in:
- ”A Preliminary Analysis of Visual Mouth Segments in Swedish Sign Language” has a bunch of useful examples of reductions.
- Why go change to external line for index and middle finger handshape? Instead of instead of internal line. This is used for V-r-VV-r (U-hand), v-rr-kk (N-måtthand, liten tumvinkelhand) and V-VV-kk (liten O-hand).

Also updated all mentions of licenses to make sure they include both CC and GPL licenses. Use ‘fladdermarkör’ (flutter marker) instead. Flutter marker + handshape with contact between thumb and fingers (ie a-hand, o-hand, nyphand och liten o-hand) = strö. Flutter marker + handshape without contact = flutter. These can be covered by ‘vinkmarkör’ placed in different places relative to the handshape. Call them ‘isärgående linjer’ instead. (Since ‘skiljande linje’ could mean either ‘a line that cuts into two’ or ‘a line that diverge’ – better to eliminate that ambiguity.) Full filename is `teckenskrift/pic/mun/all-lips.svg`. The only link found is the one on zrajm.github.io. Remove everything from TODO.txt that’s other projects. Basically every commit message mentions which project it belongs to, this is redundant when the project gets its own repo. All commit messages ends in a period, but this is not best practice so let’s undo that since we’re rewriting history anyway.
