Generally I like to have as much on the screen as possible, which works well when all the lines are long. But there are certain types of document or areas being worked on where the lines are short and most the screen width is therefore blank.
I have this idea that if the screen could be columned into n columns that flow as one single flow, you could fit many more lines on; so on a screen divided into two, the line at the bottom of the first column then has its following line at the top of the second column. When you scroll, the items would flow accordingly, into the top at one screen edge and out the bottom at the opposite edge, or vice versa, like a snake. A maximised three column view would then be equivalent to a screen that's a third the width but three times the height. You'd fit an awesome amount more on the screen, for these types of document.
Well I'm dreaming it could be... but I wonder if anyone has any comments on the idea, maybe someone's even done it somewhere!
