O1.2.4 Finalize numerics for moist simulations

Determine the numerics configuration (upwinding/central, limiter, timestep, etc.) which ensures stability and positivity of water in idealized moist simulations.

Setup

  • the simulation runs with a stretched grid whose parameters roughly match the EDMF constraints (50-55 layers, bottom ~30m, domain height should be >= 45km)

Determine the numerics configuration (upwinding/central, limiter, timestep, etc.) which ensures stability and positivity of water in idealized moist simulations.

Setup

  • the simulation runs with a stretched grid whose parameters roughly match the EDMF constraints (50-55 layers, bottom ~30m, domain height should be >= 45km)
  • the horizontal resolution is on average higher than 200km x 200km (h_elem=16, n_poly=4)

Result

  • flow statistics agree visually and semi-quantitatively with literature
  • demonstrate statistical steady-state of total energy, moisture, mass
  • demonstrate positivity of all relevant quantities
