Neume Editor ONline.

Tutorial

Welcome to the Neon tutorial! This tutorial will take you through Neon's various features and will provide a few tips and tricks to improve your Neon experience.

Score Upload

  • Upload your MEI file and the corresponding .jpg image of the score.
  • Not all formats of MEI are accepted by Neon just yet. Make sure your you are using the and tags to store your neumes within your MEI file, if not the file will not render. We are currently working on making Neon compatible with more MEI formats, and these updates will be available within future releases.

Editing Page

Once you select which score you wish to work on, you are redirected to the Editing page. At the top of the page you will see a File Dropdown menu with several options:

  • Revert: This allows you to revert your project to the original MEI file that was uploaded. Be aware that when using revert, all changes will be lost.
  • Get MEI: Download the edited MEI file.
  • Get Original Image: Download the original JPG image.
  • Get Image: Download the edited JPG image.

You will also see a sidebar. At the top you can use the sliders to adjust the glyph and image opacity. There are also two buttons to toggle between Insert and Edit mode.

Insert

This is where you insert new elements such as:

  • Neumes: when inserting neumes you can select their headshape from the dropdown menu and add Ornaments by clicking on the appropriate buttons.
  • Divisions: You can select the type of division you wish to insert by selecting the appropriate button.
  • Systems: There is only one type of system to insert. However, you must adjust the slider to specify which system number you are inserting. This will appropriately update the MEI file.
  • Clefs: You can select the type of clef you wish to insert by selecting the appropriate button.

Edit

This is where you edit the already inserted elements. If you select a single element by clicking on it (neume, clef, division...), several editing options will appear in the side bar:

  • Neumes: You can change their headshape from the dropdown menu and add/remove Ornaments by clicking on the appropriate buttons.
  • Divisions: You can change the type of division by selecting the appropriate button.
  • Systems: If you select a system, white boxes will appear on the corners, and you can shorten or extend the length of the system by clicking and dragging.
  • Clefs: You can change the type of clef by selecting the appropriate button. Keep in mind that you cannot delete the first clef on a system without first deleting all the other elements on the system.

Another important functionality to take note of is the Group/Ungroup actions. If you click and drag over a cluster of neumes, you can choose to group or ungroup them:

  • Group: Select the cluster of neumes you wish to group and the select the appropriate grouping from the dropdown menu. All the groupings require specific neume placements in order to work. Please refer to the Groupings Glossary for detailed descriptions of the available groupings.
  • Ungroup: To ungroup, simply select a set of grouped neumes and click on the Ungroup button.
  • Merge Systems: Highlight two misaligned staves and merge them together. Note that this ungroups all groupings and you must manually regroup them. You also cannot undo a merge.
  • Undo: Can undo up previous action up to 50 times. If you switch scores to edit, all previous changes will be lost. However you can still revert to the initial score with the revert functionality.
  • Delete: Click on element to delete and click delete.
  • Refresh: Refreshes the page.
  • Select All: Selects all the elements on the page.
  • Stafflock: Toggle ability to select the stafflines.
