Welcome to the Dewclaw Prosthetic Thumb project, a FOS initiative to develop a nerve-impulse controlled prosthetic thumb with haptic feedback. This project is driven by a passionate individual with a vision to create an accessible and superior prosthetic thumb that everyone can contribute to and benefit from.
Dewclaw is a 2DoF prosthetic thumb controlled by EMG signals acquired from the users forearm (or any other place where one can get clean signals)
When Dewclaw was conceived, there was limited information available on similar projects like "Third Thumb." While "Third Thumb" is an inspiring concept, Dewclaw aims to go a step further by providing documentation, advanced controls, and haptic feedback.
The Dewclaw project is composed of various subsystems, each playing a crucial role in achieving the vision:
-
Hardware
Haptic Feedback: Unlike some other projects, Dewclaw incorporates haptic feedback to enhance the user's sensory experience and control.
Controlled Naturally: Dewclaw's nerve-impulse control system sets it apart, enabling users to command their prosthetic thumb with precision and ease.
Adaptability to Other Prosthetics: The Dewclaw project is not limited to just the development of an extra prosthetic thumb. The code and principles applied here are designed to be adaptable for use in various other prosthetics, including low cost replacement thumbs or fingers.
Please do not sell the Dewclaw. The main aims of this project are to provide a cheap prosthetic and a gateway to research into human augmentation
