On multiple occasions, Srid derailed discussions into a general political/philosophical debate. Several posts have been hidden/deleted because they also contained inflammatory speech. Several community members have reported their discomfort with Srid. In that context, his Discourse profile was seen as yet another provocation. In response to this, Srid was given a warning. We asked him to stop being so confrontational, to remove the link to that page on his profile, and to not link to it again in the future, among other things. He partially complied but refused to change or remove that link, then later continued to escalate by posting a public poll on Discourse about this moderation question. This poll is exactly the behavior we are trying to stop. We will not let our community be turned into a general debate club or a circus. The suspension was precipitated from him posting the poll and is the result of considering all this.
We'll continue communicating with Srid and there is opportunity for redemption if he's willing to participate constructively.

I have been following the events and evidence closely. @ryantm What you wrote to @shlevy is a mischaracterization at best and a smear at worst.
Srid, a community member of 4+ years, was given an ultimatum demanding he comply to 3 things:
Remove link to personal page
Remove pic of steak
No more participation in "toxic threads" like the ONE -- singular, not "multiple" --- where some of his posts were (controversially) flagged, in a discussion he did not initiate, more than a month prior.
He agreed to do no. 1 and 2 under certain conditions and agreed to do no. 3 unconditionally.
While waiting for the moderators' decision to make good on their threat of banishment, he surveyed the sentiment of his community, who would have had no idea that they stood to lose a longstanding member, in the form of a poll. The poll was immediately deleted by moderators. Srid disputes that the mere asking of his community, of whether he should be banned for the above infractions, was a violation of the code of conduct (and of no. 3 above). Whether such a thing was or was not, in fact, a violation is certainly something to consider.
But also consider the stress you place on an individual when you levy formal accusations and charges, questioning their character, intentions, and integrity, and then pressure compliance to an arbitrary interpretation of a brand-new HOURS-old code of conduct upon pain of permanent (eternal, for all time, everlasting) BANISHMENT, and then have them wait, day upon day, in fear and distress, for the verdict as to their fate. That, in facing this grave predicament all alone, he wished to gauge or seek the sentiment and support, for better or for worse, of his own community through a poll, is quite understandable, if misguided.
Just who was truly "escalating" what in this situation? The government or the citizen?
Is this how a community is supposed to treat its members, even the ones it considers wayward?
Evidently, Srid's concerns and values, as well as the recommendations and compromises he proposed in response to the charges, were casually dismissed, while other members' concerns and values, as well as their calls for his punishment and sanction, were disproportionately elevated.

It's a discussion forum of a Linux distribution and not a freaking death sentence, jeez.

I can understand 1 and 3. But why 2 is demanded to do? Is steak considered toxic in nix community? If this is what happened, it's very ridiculous.

@NixOS/moderation: @srid claims that this ban was due to a link to https://srid.ca/unwoke in his Discourse profile. Is that correct?
He has given permission to the team to share any relevant private information pertaining to him.

Can you elaborate what's unacceptable about that link?

And that's unfortunate.

I shared the same sentiment here. https://discourse.nixos.org/t/moderation-team-accountability-issues/35482/15
The moderation team is actively hostile to community members, prodding them to react.

@polygon If it's only a discussion forum then why the ban in the first place, why the funny list of requests?
