I'm confused as to what this accomplishes exactly. You could do the same by just having a mavendir property which points to somewhere on your PC and then running publish

'just' is the word. With this it'll work out of the box. Nothing to do. And (see EIO PR) at also can pull out of the local Maven cache without having to do anything, or configure anything.

How does it know where to put the maven repo? I have never used the install task.

It uses the local Maven cache. That has a default location, and I'm sure there are env vars to relocate it. And "mavenLocal()" adds it to the sources list.

Would this be distinct from the publishToMavenLocal target? I think that already works.
