What is WME BackEnd Data?

WME BED (BackEnd Data) is a userscript designed to reveal some hidden information associated with places in the Waze Map Editor (WME).

Currently, the information available includes:

Additional script feature requests are described here. If you have a suggestion, please feel free to report it.

Hidden External Providers

External Providers

Waze works with other companies to add information for use in the Waze app.

To view external providers, click on the venue, and look at the bottom of the left pane.

Some have custom icons, others do not. Please feel free to report if you find an external provider that needs a custom icon. (Please be sure to include both a permalink (PL) of the venue which shows an external provider lacking an icon, and an icon suggestion.)

Additionally, some icons are clickable with more information. This is evident when a chain-link icon is shown like in the example below.

Advertisement Pins

Advertisement Pins

Advertisement Pins (ad pins) are shown in the Waze app and are not editable by users. (More information about advertisements in the Waze app is available here.)

TYPES

Ad Pin 1 Basic Ad Pin (plain, no additions)

This pin style, usually the business logo, is the most common on the map and denotes that the ad pin is correctly connected to the Waze venue. It will appear at the venue's entry/exit point. This is the best case situation.

Ad Pin 2 Ad Pin with Broken Chain icon (upper right-hand corner)

This pin variation is much less common. This means the advertisement is not linked with the Waze venue, there is potential for error, and the ad pin should be reviewed for correctness. It may or may not be in the correct location but it should be reported so Waze staff can link the advertisement to the venue. Instructions for reporting incorrect pins is located here

Ad Pin 3 Ad Pin with Google “G” icon (upper right-hand corner)

This pin variation occasionally occurs. The ad pin is linked to a Google search result. You may see a Waze venue near the pin, but it may not be exact. If you see one of these, click on the related venue to see the Waze ad pin It is not necessary to report these.

METHODS FOR LOCATING AD PINS

There are three ways to view ad pins in WME. If an ad pin exists, it will pop up on the map. You can search for ad pins using one of the following methods:

  • Select a place (or venue) in WME

  • Press the "Search for Ads By Name" button in the WME BED settings tab

Search for Ads

Enter the name in the pop-up; it can be a partial match, e.g. searching “Mike” will return “Jersey Mike’s” ads. You can use Enter/Esc keys to search/close this pop-up.

Search for Ads 2

  • Press the "Search for Ads On Screen" button in the WME BED settings tab

Note: This option is only available for rank 5 and above

Ad pins can be toggled off in the layer selection under Places

Layers

ADVERTISEMENT INFO TAB

Advertisements that are linked to a Waze place will have some additional information shown on the “Ad” tab of the place/venue in WME.

From this tab, you can do the following:

  1. Open the ad in the Waze App by scanning the QR code on this tab using your mobile device’s camera or QR reader app.

  2. Submit a Misplaced Ad Pin form on the Waze Support website by clicking on the “Report Misplaced Ad Pin” link beneath the QR code. Information from the selected ad/place will pre-populate in the form, and the QR code to open the ad in the Waze App will also appear on the right side of the form.

Note: Some advertisements are set to only run in Waze during limited hours of the day. If the ad is not currently running, scanning the QR code to open the ad will not work.

Advertisement not linked with Waze

Unlinked Ad Pin

Clicking on the ad pin for an advertisement not linked to a Waze place/venue will either prompt you to select the nearby Waze venue that is being advertised, or create a new Waze venue at the ad pin location. Once you have selected or created the appropriate Waze venue, return to the Ad tab and select the “Report Misplaced Ad Pin.” This link will take you to the Waze Support form, where the information for the corrected location will be automatically populated.

Linked Ad Pin

Places that are linked with Waze will automatically appear this way without taking any additional action.

Shelters

Shelters are shown in the Waze app and are not editable by users. More details coming soon...

Gas Prices

To view gas prices, click on a Gas Station venue and press the "Gas Price" tab (denoted by a gas pump icon). Gas prices will only be shown on Gas Stations. If the gas prices have never been updated or marked unavailable in the app, the display will show "N/A".

Script Settings

This script contains the following settings options, which are saved locally on your device.

Settings

  1. Open Ad tab when Linked Ad-Pin is selected: Enabled by default. With this setting enabled, the Waze place will open to the Ad tab instead of the General tab when you click on an Ad Pin. This does not affect clicking on the Waze place itself.

  2. Show Pop-Up when ads are searched: Enabled by default. With this setting enabled, a WazeWrap notification will appear at the top of the screen each time you search for an ad by name, and when a place/venue is selected in WME.

Popup

  1. Center Ad Pin On Click: Disabled by default. With this setting enabled, WME will center on an Ad Pin’s location when the Ad Pin is clicked.

Thanks

I would personally like to thank Joyriding, mapomatic, justins83, jm6087, abelter, santyg2001, n4dog, subs5, DCLemur, xanderb, dBsooner, Larryhayes, hiroaki27609, steelpanz, and willdanneriv. Without them, this would have never happened. Many hours of teaching, learning, testing, documenting, and hair pulling to get this thing to where it is. Finally thank you for using this script. If you see have any problems, you know how to get a hold of me.
