If you are using Twitter's Android app, you need to install an APK file.

The latest version can be found here.

By clicking on the file, you download it. If you are already on an Android phone, fine - otherwise, copy the file to your phone.

Once done, open the file, which will trigger the installation process.

After successful installation, the app should open up and you will be redirected to Android's Accessibility Services settings. There you must enable the app to use Android Accessibility Services.

Enable AAS

The permission requested include capturing screen and interaction information plus also the ability to perform actions on the user's behalf. The latter is necessary to open the navigation drawer on Twitter app's first start after installing Twitter-Tracking, which is needed to retrieve the username. Don't worry: no other actions will be performed, no other data than click and scroll information will be tracked and your username will be pseudonymized so no inference of your personal data will be possible.

Requested Permissions AAS

Last but not least, you will be able to see the data collected during your current session in the Twitter-Tracking app. Make some interactions with Twitter and on Twitter-Tracking app's next launch, you will be presented a list of events.

Troubleshooting

Here are some problems encountered when trying to install:

  • make sure you have enough free storage left - there will be no error message explaining what went wrong
  • Google keeps warning you very often about installing apps from untrusted sources. While this is generally a good advice, in this case please ignore the warnings
    • on some devices you have to enable specific apps like your file explorer or your browser to install APKs
    • on some devices you get another warning, which has to be acknowledged by clicking "Install anyway"
