Doomretro doesn't honor caps lock swapped with escape

I'm using river on wayland with caps lock swapped with escape via

riverctl keyboard-layout -options caps:swapescape pl

but doomretro still treats escape as escape (f.e. to exit the game) instead of caps lock.

It's similar to VSCode issue (here's screenshot from Vim extension):
