This PR cleans up {finalsize} to prepare for a handover.

This is how benchmark results would change (along with a 95% confidence interval in relative change) if 49ff66c is merged into main:

• ✔️complex_iterative: 540ms -> 541ms [-0.9%, +1.05%]
• ✔️complex_newton: 648ms -> 650ms [-0.15%, +0.59%]
• ✔️default_iterative: 511ms -> 512ms [-0.34%, +0.44%]
• ✔️default_newton: 509ms -> 511ms [-0.03%, +0.95%]
