1st milestone project: User-Centric Frontend Development - Code Institute assignment project.

This is the website of the British music band "Portishead" for fans and potentials fans. It contains information about the band, as well as their photos, videos and audio. In addition, the website gives the opportunity to contact Portishead's management, to be aware of the latest news and tours and it provides the links for following Portishead on the social media.

UX

  • As a user, I want to easily find the links to their social media accounts.

Design

The goal in design was to create a website that is overall user friendly, has a modern feel with emphasis on providing information about the music band in a readable and eye-catching way.

  • Framework Bootstrap was chosen for this project for its modern interface, ease of use and ability to be easily customized. It is used for creating features such as navbar, forms, modals, as well as for the layout.
  • Color scheme : The dark-grey and black colours were chosen to create and reflect the mood and atmosphere of psychedelic and deep trip-hop music. As well as that, the dark-red colour was chosen to highlight some details and to catch the user’s attention (for CTA buttons, dividers, music section background).
Different shades of grey colour and shadows allow us to create clean and neat backgrounds and volume effect accross the website.
  • Typography: There are three fonts used across the project that I find a good combination: simple and modern PT+Sans used as a primary font, decorative and unusual Indie+Flower and stylish Bitter.

Features

Existing Features

Navbar

The navbar is fixed at the top of the page, this allows a user to easily navigate throughout the website. The logo is located in the top left corner on a desktop and in the center on smaller devices. It redirects the user to the home page when clicked.
On the smaller resolutions the navbar is collapsed into a burger icon. Menu links appear when the burger icon is clicked and collapse back, when clicked again.

Footer

The footer feature links to the social media accounts which open in a new tab (by using 'target="_blank"). As well, it contains a disclaimer and link to the author GitHub page.

Signup to Newsletter Form

The signup modal is available on navbar and can be open on all pages. It allows users to sign up in order to get the latest news by e-mail, by filling out the form and submitting it.

Contact form

The contact modal is available on navbar and can be open on all pages. It allows users to contact the Portishead’s management by filling out the form. Validation is in place against empty fields, for better UX different border colors are used for validation (red-invalid, green - valid).

Home page

Home page simply contains a hero image, main heading, quote paragraph and Scroll to the bottom arrow button tha leads to the About section when clicked. About section contains a general info about the band (full biography available in the About modal when the "Read more" button is clicked). Additionaly, there are bands members' images with some more info about them.

Tours page

Tours page simply contains a table of coming tour events with the photo, place, date and a link to the resource where a user can buy tickets. Apart from that, it contains a paragraph and link to the Contact form for booking the band for the private events.

Media page

Media page includes:

  • Gallery section with 15 images that can be viewed and downloaded
  • Music section with links to Apple and Google pay for buying albums and Spotify iframe included for all 3 albums
  • Video section with 4 Youtube videos implemented with iframes and a link to the Youtube official chanel of the band

Features Left to Implement

  • In the future, I would like to implement back-end for contact and sign-up form to make them fully functional.
  • Another feature that I would implement is a Store page where users can buy merchandise from the Portishead band.

Testing

The fans and potential fans user story achieved the intended outcome of providing them with a showcase of Portishead's music life. On the home section, they can see the phrase from one of the band's songs and see the photo from the Portishead's concert to get the first impression about them. Next, users can see the separate band's members pictures as well as to read information about them by hovering over the images. They are also able to view my social media profiles via clicking on the icons in the footer. The users can fill out the SignUp form as well as the Enquire form in order to sign up or invite Portishead for their own party respectively. Considering the media section, fans can listen to Portishead's music using the Spotify links in the music section. They are also able to watch band's videos by clicking on the YouTube links in the video section.

If you try to submit the SignUp or Enquire form with an invalid email address, there will be an error noting the invalid email address. Furthermore, the 'required' attribute is added to the 'name,' 'email,' ‘password’ and 'repeat password' fields, so if those fields are not filled in, the form will not submit. If all field are valid, the page will reload. All links in the footer will open in a new tab using 'target="_blank". All links have been manually tested to ensure that they are pointing to the correct destination.

Validators

Html
All the HTML files were tested through W3C Markup Validation Service. No errors were found across the html pages. CSS CSS files were tested through W3C CSS Validation Service. Since it does not recognize CSS variables (I use :root{} for colours and fonts variables), there were several Parse Errors found.
As well as that, there are a few error warnings for some -webkit, -moz pseudo element selectors. Both errors can be safely ignored as they are not errors in fact. The rest of the CSS files was completely valid.

Compatibility and Responsiveness

This website had been being tested during the development across multiple browsers (Chrome, Safary, Opera, FireFox, Internet Explorer) and on multiple devices: mobile (iPhone 5, 6, 8, Samsung Galaxy, Sony Xperia), tablets(iPad, iPadPro) and laptops (with HiDPI and MDPI and touch screens), as well as on extra-large screen(1980 x 1080).
As well as on Google Chrome's developer tools to see how it looks across all the different device screen sizes to ensure compatibility and responsiveness.
I also used Am I Responsive online tool for checking responsiveness on different devices.
Plenty of changes were made and necessary media queries added to make the website fully responsive.

Deployment

This site is hosted using GitHub pages, deployed directly from the master branch, the live version can be found here. The deployed version of the site is the most current version in the repository. To deploy this page to GitHub Pages from its GitHub repository the following steps have to be made:

  1. From the menu items near the top of the page, select Settings
  2. Scroll down to the GitHub Pages section
  3. Under Source click the drop-down menu labelled None and select Master Branch.
On selecting Master Branch the page will be automatically refreshed and the website is now deployed
  4. Scroll back down to the GitHub Pages section in Settings to retrieve the link to the deployed website. It may take a short time to go live, but typically less than 60 seconds
