Kepler CLI Search Tool

I really like astrology, and there is a common interest on building projects using the data from Nasa's Kepler telescope, so I wanted to hop on this kind of ptoject as well. I wanted to do something different, so instead of building some sort of webapp I tried to do something different using the CLI. Here's the result: Screenshot from 2023-05-23 18-30-23

To run the app, clone the repo, cd into the directory, install dependencies and run:

npm start

Then, you'll see the title screen and the menu. I recommend reading chosing the guide option before chosing "Start". Screenshot from 2023-05-23 18-29-42

The app

This is a second version to a less detailed CLI app based on the same idea. I've used Chalk, Figlet and Inquirer for the graphic part.

In regards to the app functionality, it uses streams to read the CSV of the registered planets in Kepler's website. The incoming data get's filtered depending on the user requirements.

For the "press a key to continue part", I used promises combined with the readline module to read keypress events, but ,since it is not possible to remove event listeners, the moment I try to use it again in any other place the app crashes, so I limited it to te title screen.

User requirements can be specified choosing between these options:

  • Habitable planets
  • Planets inside a certain temperature interval
  • Planets inside a certain size interval
  • Planets inside a certain orbital period interval

The habitability conditions (extracted from Paul Glister's research on planet habitability) used to filter down planets where:

  • KOI disposition (A parameter to measure stellar disposition, explained in depth here
  • Light incidence (Between 0.36 and 1.11 asigning the Earth an incidence of 1)
  • Planet radius (Inferior than 1.6 times the size of the Earth)
