Comparing 5 ESG related funds to find out where the biggest bang for your environmental, social, and governmental buck is.

Question to answer:

  • What Fund provides historically the best return?

    • FAN Fund indicated the best historal return, and its risk was commensurate with the SPY.
  • What Fund provides the best return over time?

    • ETHO Fund provides the best return over a 10 year period but is also riskier than the SPY.
  • What sample portfolios of the ESG funds provide the best returns?

    • Sharpe Ratio displays the risk-adjusted peformance of the fund. In the case of sample funds, the fund with the best Sharpe Ratio was FAN at .88 followed by ETHO at .81, showing they have the most execess returns and lowest volatility of the other sample funds.
  • What sectors do the funds cover and at what proportion?

  • How are ESG funds rated and how ist he rating system used?

      • The funds were rated as follows:
      • FAN, ESGD, and EFAX = AA

      • SPY = BBB
  • Can ESG funds peform just as well as the S&P500, a non-ESG benchmark?

    • Historical data analysis based on 3 years of data
    • Monte Carlo simulations based on 500 simulations
      • 1-year simulation used 1 year of historical data
      • 5-year, 10-year, and 20-year simulations used 3 years of historical data
    • ESG funds were equally weighted and the simulated data showed that investing in ESG funds results in a more conservative approach in comparison to the benchmark.
    • Based on an initial investment of $10,000 there is 95 percent chance that over the next year the ESG funds for each simulation will end with a narrower range between the lower and upper limits of the confidence interval than that of the benchmark.
    • Based on the sharpe ratio comparisons between the benchmark (S&P500) and the ESG funds, it has been observed that three of the ESG funds have better sharpe ratios than the benchmark, which is indicative of better peformance. The overall ESG portfolio sharpe ratio (the mean o fthe ESG portfolio sharpe ratio) is comparable with that of the benchmark.
    • Based on the calculated excess kurtosis, it has been observed that the values of the excess kurtosis of the benchmark and that of the ESG funds do compare with the marginal variability. This indicates that the benchmark and the ESG funds do entertain a similar level of kurtosis.
    • Based on the calculated skew, it has been observed that both the benchmark and the ESG funds do show negative skew. There is a high probability that behaviors in the return of investment of the ESG funds might look like that of the benchmark.

What else would we analyze if we had more time?

  • Taking a look at different weighted portfolios to see what combinations produced the best results.
  • Investigate correlations between an ESG fund's sector weighting and overall results, for example, does a fund with more investment in say solar energy or alternative infrastructure produce a better return? The fact that FAN performed the best overall and has more directed investments in utilities, renewable energies and other alternative energy infrastructure made us wonder if such a focused fund would produce better results over time.

Data Sets used:

  • Historical ticker data for each ESG fund.
  • Historical Data for major firms that have ESG portfolios (i.e. Vanguard).
  • Data for ESG fund sector weighting and fund grades (www.etf.com).
