It's not perfect, but it's progress. There are a bunch of different functions with many code paths. Also a number of functions which rely on some pandas internals for typing. I would refactor this for clearer type hints, but I don't want to refactor without test coverage. So I'll merge this as is for now (it's a step in the right direction), and revisit.
