⸨sub⸩2⸨/sub⸩ Twenty and five years old was he when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. His motherʼs name also ⸨i⸩was⸨/i⸩ Abi, the daughter of Zachariah.⸨marg⸩
⸨sub⸩3⸨/sub⸩ And he did ⸨i⸩that which was⸨/i⸩ right in the sight of the ⸨sc⸩Lord⸨/sc⸩, according ⸨fix:to⸩··⸨/fix⸩ all that David his father did.⸨marg⸩
⸨sub⸩4⸨/sub⸩ ¶ He removed the high places, and brake the ⸨sup⸩✝⸨/sup⸩images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the ⸨sup⸩⸨i⸩⸨fix:b⸩d⸨/fix⸩⸨/i⸩⸨/sup⸩ brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan.⸨marg⸩⸨sup⸩✝⸨/sup⸩ ⸨fix:Heb⸼⸩He·⸼⸨/fix⸩ ⸨i⸩statues⸨/i⸩⸨fix:.⸩⸨/fix⸩⸨row⸩⸨sup⸩⸨i⸩⸨fix:b⸩d⸨/fix⸩⸨/i⸩⸨/sup⸩ Num⸼ ⸨fix:21⸼⸩·1⸼⸨/fix⸩ 9⸼

⸨sub⸩6⸨/sub⸩ For he clave to the ⸨sc⸩Lord⸨/sc⸩, ⸨i⸩and⸨/i⸩ departed not ⸨sup⸩✝⸨/sup⸩from following him, but kept his commandments, which the ⸨sc⸩Lord⸨/sc⸩ commanded Moses.⸨marg⸩⸨sup⸩✝⸨/sup⸩ Heb⸼ ⸨i⸩from after him⸨/i⸩.

⸨sub⸩14⸨/sub⸩ And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish, saying, I have offended; return from me: that which thou puttest on me will I bear. And the king of Assyria appointed unto Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.⸨marg⸩

⸨sub⸩21⸨/sub⸩ Now, behold, thou ⸨sup⸩✝⸨/sup⸩trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed, ⸨i⸩even⸨/i⸩ upon Egypt, on which if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: ⸨fix:so⸩s·⸨/fix⸩ ⸨i⸩is⸨/i⸩ Pharaoh king of Egypt unto all that trust on him.⸨marg⸩⸨sup⸩✝⸨/sup⸩ Heb⸼ ⸨i⸩trustest thee⸨/i⸩.

⸨sub⸩26⸨/sub⸩ Then said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebna, and Joah, unto Rab‑shakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand ⸨i⸩it⸨/i⸩⸨fix:: ⸩⸨i⸩: ⸨/i⸩⸨/fix⸩and talk not with us in the Jewsʼ language in the ears of the people that ⸨i⸩are⸨/i⸩ on the wall.⸨marg⸩

⸨sub⸩28⸨/sub⸩ Then Rab‑shakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jewsʼ language, and spake, saying, Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria:⸨marg⸩
⸨sub⸩29⸨/sub⸩ Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you out of his hand:⸨marg⸩
⸨sub⸩30⸨/sub⸩ Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the ⸨sc⸩Lord⸨/sc⸩, saying, The ⸨sc⸩Lord⸨/sc⸩ will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.⸨marg⸩
⸨sub⸩31⸨/sub⸩ Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, ⸨sup⸩❙✝⸨/sup⸩Make ⸨i⸩an agreement⸨/i⸩ with me by a present, and come out to me, and ⸨i⸩then⸨/i⸩ eat ye every man of his own vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his ⸨sup⸩❙⸨/sup⸩cistern:⸨marg⸩⸨sup⸩❙⸨/sup⸩ Or, ⸨i⸩Seek my ⸨fix:favour⸩favou·⸨/fix⸩⸨/i⸩.⸨row⸩⸨sup⸩✝⸨/sup⸩ Heb⸼ ⸨i⸩Make ⸨fix:with⸩wi·⸨/fix⸩ me a blessing⸨/i⸩.⸨row⸩⸨sup⸩❙⸨/sup⸩ Or, ⸨i⸩pit⸨/i⸩.
⸨sub⸩32⸨/sub⸩ Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of ⸨fix:corn⸩c·rn⸨/fix⸩ and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of oil olive and of honey, that ye may live, and not ⸨fix:die⸩di·⸨/fix⸩: and hearken not unto Hezekiah, when he ⸨sup⸩❙⸨/sup⸩persuadeth you, saying, The ⸨sc⸩Lord⸨/sc⸩ will deliver us.⸨marg⸩⸨fix:⸨sup⸩❙⸨/sup⸩ ⸩ ⸨/fix⸩Or, ⸨i⸩⸨fix:deceiveth⸩·eceiveth⸨/fix⸩⸨/i⸩.
⸨sub⸩33⸨/sub⸩ Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered at all his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?⸨marg⸩
⸨sub⸩34⸨/sub⸩ Where ⸨i⸩are⸨/i⸩ the gods of Hamath, and of Arpad? where ⸨i⸩are⸨/i⸩ the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah? have they delivered Samaria out of mine hand?⸨marg⸩
⸨sub⸩35⸨/sub⸩ Who ⸨i⸩are⸨/i⸩ they among all the gods of the countries, that have delivered their country out of mine hand, that the ⸨sc⸩Lord⸨/sc⸩ should deliver Jerusalem out of mine hand?⸨marg⸩
⸨sub⸩36⸨/sub⸩ But the people held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the kingʼs commandment was, saying, Answer him ⸨fix:not⸩n·t⸨/fix⸩.⸨marg⸩
⸨sub⸩37⸨/sub⸩ Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which ⸨i⸩was⸨/i⸩ over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder, to Hezekiah with ⸨i⸩their⸨/i⸩ clothes rent, and told him the words of Rab‑shakeh.⸨marg⸩ |
