A startup named Sparkify wants to analyze user activities using their song and user data. The current data is spread among several JSON files, making it hard to query and analyze.
This project aims to create an ETL pipeline to load song and user data to a Postgres database, making it easier to query and analyze data.
To complete the project, you will need to define fact and dimension tables for a star schema for a particular analytic focus, and write an ETL pipeline that transfers data from files in two local directories into the tables in Postgres using Python and SQL.
python create_tables.py
python etl.py
- create_tables.py: Clean previous schema and creates tables.
- sql_queries.py: All queries used in the ETL pipeline.
- etl.py: Read JSON logs and JSON metadata and load the data into generated tables.
- db.py: To setup a connection with database and return connection and cursor objects.
- etl.ipynb: Process one file song and log data into database
- test.ipynb: Verify the results of any table
- songplays: Records in log data associated with song plays
- users: Users in the app
- songs: Songs in music database
- artists: Artists in music database
- time: Timestamps of records in songplays broken down into specific units
Each file is in JSON format and contains metadata about a song and the artist of that song. The files are partitioned by the first three letters of each song's track ID. For example, here are filepaths to two files in this dataset.
song_data/A/B/C/TRABCEI128F424C983.json song_data/A/A/B/TRAABJL12903CDCF1A.json
And below is an example of what a single song file, TRAABJL12903CDCF1A.json, looks like.

The log files in the dataset you'll be working with are partitioned by year and month. For example, here are filepaths to two files in this dataset.
