This repository contains automated workflows to build portable installations of RabbitMQ, along with Erlang, so you can avoid installing them as system dependencies.
Tested for Linux and Windows only
The inspiration was quickly getting up and running with RabbitMQ for Celery. I was experimenting with small scale distributed applications and saw that there is no portable version of RabbitMQ or Erlang. For the simple need of running a server quickly on a single node, there seemed to be a lot of system-wide installation involved.
This would particularly be helpful if you need to test your applications running on RabbitMQ locally, but do not have admin access on your laptop (corporate laptop?) and want to get up and running quickly.
For Linux, we build erlang from source since there are no prebuilt binaries provided. Erlang only provided direct installations via package manager. For Windows, we download the 64bit release in Zip format and extract it to our internal directory.
Then, we download rabbitmq's binaries (zip for windows, tar.xf for linux), unpack it, put it in a directory with erlang, and have a start script that takes care of setting any env variables needed for running it. We then package everything with PyInstaller into a single executable.
NOTE: On the windows version, the main script checks if vcredist is installed or not. If there isn't one, it installs a bundled vc_redist.exe provided by Erlang OTP in their pre-built binary zips.
Simply download the latest release from the releases section for your platform, then run the executable rabbitmq server.
There can be a number of enhancements made to this, such as passing cli args to the rabbitmq server on startup through the main.py script, or support for more platforms/versions. If you have an enhancement to add, simply fork the repo and create a PR for it.
I haven't added any tests to ensure if the PR would not break anything, since I'm confused about how to go about ensuring everything started fine. If you have a suggestion, please create a PR for it.
