I just figured out, that sherlock is basically doing the same, defining everything in a big JSON file and parsing it... Maybe I'll steal missing services from their repository. BUT: They cannot extract data. But namespotter can do it. Not now, but in the near future. Currently figuring out issues and finetuning existing services. Stay tuned and give it a chance, you may love it!
Changes upcoming... Will restructure the whole project (YAML definition of services instead of plenty of files that contain basically the same lines of code). Also, not only scanning for existent usernames will be possible, but also, to extract possibly interesting information from each service. Translation into YAML syntax will take a while. Stay tuned.
NameSpotter is a powerful but easy Python program designed to efficiently scan multiple websites and social media platforms to check the availability of a specific username. Utilizing the power of multithreading, NameSpotter maximizes performance by concurrently scanning dozens of websites, allowing you to quickly determine if a username is registered or available.
- Clone repository:
git clone https://github.com/simplylu/namespotter
- cd into directory:
cd namespotter
- Install requirements:
pip3 install -r requirements.txt
Run: python3 namespotter.py <username>
Sample run:
user@client ~/X/Y/NameSpotter (main)> python3 namespotter.py s1mplylu

Found 4 services for username s1mplylu
Took 5.33s to run

Some services may utilize firewalls or services like CloudFront / CloudFlare. If you suspect to get a wrong result for a service, try to run it through a Proxy, VPN or Tor.
If you wanna test the code for it's functionality, run python3 test.py
to check if everything works. You might get errors for above mentioned services using extra security mechanisms.
Everything which is somehow related to Google and companies is quite annoying to check. Currently, there are problems to implement checks for the following services. Feel free to try and contribute.
- twitter.com
- reddit.com
- 500px.com
- onlyfans.com (one security key gets calculated in JS and without it, one can't query the API the website uses to check for an existing profile...)
- tripadvisor.com (Implemented, curl logic does work, but in Python the requests are timing out.)
- creativemarket.com (CloudFront / Cloudflare...)
There are a couple of services in /services
that start with an underscore. Those are ignored by the program and most probably services, that have been implemented, but do not work for any reason. Feel free to check them out and make them work.
This is a blueprint of a new service. Copy it to a new file in /services
.:
import requests
__info__ = "Put one sentence describing the service here."
def check(username: str) -> bool:
url: str = f"<url to service goes here, replace actual username with {username}"
req: requests.Response = requests.get(url)
return ("<pattern>" in req.text, url)
# or
return (req.status_code // 100 == 2, url)
Please remember to always return a tuple of the form Tuple[bool, str]
. The bool
describes whether the username exists for that service or not. The str
contains the URL to that user of that service. If you don't use that return type, userscan will probably fail.
I've used two methods, depending on how the service responds to the request of non-existing usernames.
The first one is checking the status code. If it is not 2XX, it might be something like 4XX or 5XX and the user probably does not exist.
Another method is to compare a sucessful response and the response for the request of a non-existing user. Maybe you can find a pattern being part of only one response, which you can use to decide whether the user exists, or not.
This is not failsafe and working services might not work in the future. That's what testing is for.
Add the service (name must be the exact as the filename, without the .py
extension), an existing username, as well as a non-existing username to test.py. Just copy an existing section, it's quite easy.
After that, you can test the new service by running python3 test.py <name of the service>
. If you added for example spotify.py
to the services
folder, and the respective section in test.py
, you can check the service by calling python3 test.py spotify
.
When running python3 test.py
, it'll test every available service. This is good for checking if the whole repository works, but for testing single / new services, take the above approach.
