I maintain the mapbox-gl-shadow-simulator and leaflet-shadow-simulator libraries on NPM along with hosting shademap.app. I also made react-leaflet-vector-tile-layer.

During a hike in the mountains I noticed that the terrain drastically changed the amount of sunlight along my path. I wondered it it was possible to simulate this effect on a map. It was!

Now I'm on a path to experiment and create online tools that help us visualize sun and shadow for any time and place on earth. My vision is to help you find shade anywhere at any time.

ShadeMap is free, but the hosting is not. ShadeMap runs on a 50,000 map loads per month free-tier but has exceeded this quota several times in the past, resulting in fees in the $100's of dollars. Additionally expenses are domain registration, Cloudflare Workers, and a Linode VPS.
