When you start-up FetCh, it will attempt to connect to all the instruments it is configured to use. If there are no instruments configured, you will see this warning:
If you see this, then it means FetCh has not yet been set-up on your system, and you should probably go and follow the "Quick Set-Up Guide" before attempting this one.
Normally, however, you will see a window like the following:
This lists all the instruments that have been configured and will go through each of them one-by-one attempting to establish a connection to them. Upon a connection being successfully established, the icon next to the instrument will become a green tick/check-mark. Upon failure, it will become a red exclamation mark (!).
If one or more connections fail, you will see an error message telling you so. You will then be taken to the "Connections" page where the error(s) can be seen.

In this case, our connection to a Stanford Research Systems SR830 lock-in amplifier failed because it was configured to connect to the wrong GPIB address.
The most common reasons for connections failing are:
- Instrument in use - fixed by closing any other software that might be trying to use the instrument
- Incorrect address - fixed by correcting the address
- Dangling connections - fixed by restarting the instrument
- Loose connections - fixed by making sure any connecting wires are secured
- Instrument off - fixed by turning the instrument on
- Instrument made by Oxford Instruments - no known fix
