How to create a gif

Lukas Strobel edited this page Mar 9, 2019 · 3 revisions

This is a basic tutorial for creating gifs to be placed on the Sidewalk webpage.

  1. If you already have a video of what you want to make a gif out of, skip to step 5
  2. Download screen-recording software. I recommend OBS, a free, open-source, recording program for Windows, Mac, and Linux.
  3. If you are recording gifs for the tutorial, I recommend temporarily disabling tutorial progress so that the context menu doesn't disappear the second you click on the correct action. It looks much cleaner.
  4. Record yourself doing whatever actions you need using your screen-recording software. If you need help with OBS, they have a great quickstart guide.

For the rest of this tutorial, I will explain the process for Photoshop.

  1. Import your video into Photoshop using File > Import > Video Frames to Layers...
  2. Crop your gif to your specifications using the crop tool
  3. Trim your gif as needed by selecting frames of the gif in the bottom toolbar, then clicking the trash can icon below them.
  4. Export your gif using File > Export > Save For Web (Legacy)...
  5. I recommend using the GIF 128 Dithered preset. You can also change the size of your gif in the bottom right.
  6. Press save, and use wherever needed!
