Samples of using Vulkan API

This samples are written with the help of Intel tutorials, which can be found here. The goal is better understanding on Vulkan API and writing very straightforward and plain code easy for reading.

All samples are simplified to use fixed size of window.

Thanks to Intel for very nice and easy readable tutorials!

System requirenments

For now the project is tested only for MSVC 2015 x64 on Windows 8.1 / 10. Cross-platform build is to be supported in (not far?) future.

For building the samples on Widows the Lunar SDK was used.

Graphics Samples

01_Context

The shortest and simplest console application. Creates Vulckan instance and lists all physical devices found on the machine (only compatible with Vulkan)

Example:

01_Context

02_CommandBuffers

Another console application that makes nothing exciting. Was created to try and debug more commands like creating logical device, allocating command buffers and of course correct releasing of all resources

Example:

02_CommandBuffers

03_Window

First window with Vulkan! Creates window and clears color. This example shows how to create swapchain, prepare simples command buffers and make correct swapchain images processing

Example:

03_Window

04_DynamicCommands

Uses dynamic creating of command buffers for changing window clear color. Probably this way of creating animation is not completelly correct and effective. The proper way of creating dynamic commands can be found in ths sample 06_AdvancedQuad. This sample is kept for historical reasons.

Example:

04_DynamicCommands

05_SimpleTriangle

First geometry! Shows how to create the most simple graphics pipeline and use shaders in SPIR-V language In this example all verticlaes are hardcoded in vertex shaders to make the sample as simple as possible.

Example:

05_SimpleTriangle

06_AdvancedQuad

More advances rendering example. Now the geometry is passed to shaders in the proper way - through a vertex buffer. Also there is implemened correct way of dynamic creating of command buffers.

Example:

06_AdvancedQuad

07_SimpleShading

It starts being exciting! Finally complex geonetry is drawn by Vulkan. This sample generates mesh sphere and adjusts graphics pipeline to render indexed verticles Shaders implement simple diffuse shading in screen space

Example:

07_SimpleShading

08_InteractiveCube

Renders simple cube, which can be rotated by mouse. This sample shows how to compute proper ModelView and Projection matrixes and pass them to vertex shader as uniform buffers in runtime.

Example:

08_InteractiveCube

09_Texture

Adds texture to the interactive cube. Shows how to load pixel data to host visible image and transfer it to GPU image. Creates texture sampler and adds it to descriptor set

Example:

09_Texture

12_Animation

Example of using push constatns in order to quickly update shader parameters. This sample loads texture with a map of frames and plays animation, using push constatns for updating texture coordinates for the current frame

Example:

12_Animation

Animation and character belongs to The Walt Disney Company

13_GeometryShader

More complicated example with two drawing batches anad using geometry shader. Also it shows how to enable depth testing.

Example:

13_GeometryShader

14_FurRendering

Experiments with geometrix shader. Implemented simplest way of fur rendering. The sample application setups depth proper alpha blending and depth desting with manual sorting of fur emitters

Example:

14_FurRendering

Compute Samples

10_ComputePipeline

First compute sample. Shows how to create simplest compute pipeline and compute shader. The compute shader takes input array of 1024 integers, increments the each one, and stores to the output array

Example:

10_ComputePipeline

11_HeatComputation

This sample implements simplest algorithm of heat equation solution. There are used two compute pipelines working with textures and images from swapchain. Computations are made with waiting for fence, maybe it is not optimal, but much more simple.

Example:

11_HeatComputation

15_MultiplyMatrix

Compute shader for fast matrix multiplication Uses blocky approach from Steps3D

Example:

15_MultiplyMatrix

16_Blur

Example of applying big radius blur via few iterations of compute shader invocation. Uses a couple of optimizations: separable convolution and sampling between pixels.

Example:

16_Blur

17_RayTracing

Simplest example of using the Ray Tracing pipeline. Draws a diffuse shaded cube with x4 antialiasing. Requires NVidia RTX video card with the "VK_NV_ray_tracing" extension.

Example:

17_RayTracing

18_RT_RayMarching

Advanced example of ray tracing pipeline with a custom ray intersection shader. This sample renders a Mandelbulb fractal with the help of Ray Marching algorithm (see www.iquilezles.org articles for more details.

Example:

18_RayMarching
