Details

2023-Sept-5, 12:00-13:00 UTC, Microsoft Teams

Agenda

  1. Welcome
  2. Review agenda
  3. Secretariat update
    • Two members are still not in the WMO Contacts DB (Raquel, Boonchai)
    • Report for MIE next Tuesday
  4. Updates since last meeting (Team)
    • All to review the proposed changes to SWA (Issue #308) and VAA (Issue #307) and provide comments there.
    • Anna to find out if registry http://codes.wmo.int/common/nil is under the responsibility of TT-AvData. (AM: Yes and other teams if needed, see MoC vI.3 Section 3, p. 6)
    • Mark to ask NOAA SWA experts if there is a chance of having more than 4 previous advisories to be replaced. (MO: Consulted w/ Rob Steenburgh; Four is sufficient.)
  5. Discussion on the progress of schema development (Choy)
    • Design choices to consider:
      • Can we not use the word "product"? Can we use the term "collective", "collection" or even "story" to indicate the potentially loose relationship among objects the collective carries?
      • For elements with non-existing or nil content make it either (i) optional or (ii) mandatory but "nillable" and with nilReason
        <element1>
            ...
        </element1>

        or

        <element1>
            <element2 xsi:nil="true" nilReason="http://codes.wmo.int/common/nil/missing"/>
            ...
        </element1>

      • In VONA a volcano is referenced by name and IAVCEI number, and we also want to share these in defining a volcano in QVACI. Should we also make reference to the "volcano information database" and its number in the database?
      • A WxObject is an instance of MeteorologicalFeature and is supposed to be prepared by the originator. For the volcano object should we allow QVA/VONA producer to introduce additional stuff (e.g. remarks) in it? Recall that a WxObject need not be explicitly defined in an IWXXM instance but can reference online resources with a URL.
      • In QVACI if we want to make back references to VONA, do we want to do it as part of volcano properties or as part of QVACI?
      • How can we best present a category (ashDensityCategory) as well as the value it refers to (ashDensityEqualsOrExceeds)?
  6. Forthcoming events:
    • Conduct public consultation on changes in the proposed Amendment 81 (early September to early December 2023)
    • Review of responses from public consultation (mid-Nov- 6 December 2023)
    • Review and approve changes to IWXXM involved in Amendment 81 for FT2024-1 (Tentatively mid-Dec 2023. Release date subject to when Amendment 81 is approved by ANC (if there are impacts to IWXXM) and the difference between the approved and proposed versions of Annex 3/PANS-MET)
    • ICAO WG-MIE/11 4-7 December
  7. Next meeting date and time
  8. [Shelved] Outstanding work of previous meetings (Team): There were no further updates to these topics.
    • XSD locations for IWXXM packages (#271) (Jan)
    • On-going populating new examples in wmo-im/iwxxm-translation (Mark, Jan and Dmitry)
  9. [Shelved] Review outstanding issues with no milestones (Anna).

Notes

  • Secretariat updates
    • Anna to send report (in email to Becky and Tim) on WMO activities for MIE on Tuesday. Intention: (1) Ask when Annex 3 will be approved by ANC (before the applicable date which is understood to be Nov 2024); (2) Make sure there is an action item on Communication Task for ICAO Secretariat to follow.
    • Boonchai and Raquel to include their names in https://contacts.wmo.int
  • Review actions
    • Anna indicated that the team will have to manage Code Table D-1 as it is used with GML and IWXXM is the only format in WMO which is using GML.
    • Choy to move Mark's comment on SWA to respective issue.
    • Raquel indicated that she was not familiar with downloading and validating the schemas. Choy to conduct a workshop to help Raquel and Boonchai to kick-start schema validation as well as code list management.
    • Mark confirmed that 4 previous advisories should be sufficient.
  • Schema development
    • The team discussed alternative words than "Product". "Collection", "Collective" and "Data set" are potential candidates.
    • Choy presented the updates to the UML model for QVA.
    • Choy raised some design considerations:
      • The team was aware that in a TAC message the name of null elements may be required to exist to maintain the message's structure, but for an XML message this may not be the case. For new non-legacy IWXXM reports we may allow null elements to be left out to avoid having a list of empty elements with nilReasons.
      • The team discussed the use of gml:identifier to uniquely identify a WxObject as well as a WxObject collection.
      • The team discussed the adoption of descriptions of a volcano from VONA. WG-MOG's views on the finalized one may be required.
      • The team discussed the use of iwxxm:ElevatedVolume instead of aixm:AuthorityForAirspace to describe the responsible area of a VAAC. WG-MOG's views on whether a more generic or an aviation specific description of the region/space is more appropriate.
      • The team discussed the need to reference other information (e.g. VONA) and appropriate place for them (e.g. as a property of volcano or as part of the collective). WG-MOG's views will be sought.
      • The team discussed the use of the collect to hold other collective-wide information (e.g. ash dispersion model information).
      • The team was aware that the WMOCategoryCode enumeration may need to be revised. Especially the WMO Core Metadata Profile version 1.3 has been superseded with a new version.
      • Mark mentioned that iwxxm:ashDensityEqualsOrExceeds comes from Karen and is considered to be a requirement. However, similar element does not exist in WAFS SIGWX F/C. WG-MOG's views on whether retrofitting is required for WAFS SIGWX F/C.

Actions

  • Choy to set up side a workshop to guide new members on how to review and test IWXXM as well as management of the code lists
  • Anna to look up the original source of WMOCategoryCode and how it is being used in WCMP and/or WCMP2(?)
  • Mark and Choy to finalize the design of QVA and VONA
  • Mark and Choy to follow up with WG-MOG to finalize the design of QVA and VONA
