: If you can read Chinese, translate the doc to English here:
Zotero Better Notes is a note-taking plug-in developed by @ windingwind for the document management software Zotero. It is completely open source, free, supports double-stranded notes, supports markdown and markup language, and deeply integrates document management and reading functions. The home page is https://github.com/windingwind/zotero-better-notes This document mainly introduces the basic functions and usage of Better Notes, and shares several workflows using Better Notes.
If you are carefully investigating all kinds of literature note-taking methods, you may feel big. How to choose a note-taking tool & method that suits you?
I recommend Better Notes to you here. Benefiting from Zotero and its open community, it is a note-taking tool that deeply combines document management and reading functions, so it does not need complicated configuration and cross-software linkage.
Maybe you're still hesitating. Here are a few recommended reasons to try Better Notes:
- Easy to install. Lightweight (3MB), cross-platform and configuration-free, out of the box.
- Easy to get started. Both markdown users and onenote/word users can follow the original operation habits
- Easy to export. Even if you find that it is not suitable for you after trying, you don't worry about losing the data in the process of using it, and you can export it to other mainstream note-taking tools with one click.
Please read1 Quick StartGive it a try!
Many Zotero users have become accustomed to the note workflow linked by third-party software. Although Better Notes fully supports the completion of all notes in Zotero, it can also be used with third-party note-taking software, replacing multiple plug-ins, and even completing some operations that the original linked note-taking workflow cannot achieve.
On the other hand, Better Notes can also help simplify existing workflows. If you are using or planning to use markdown-based note-taking tools, such as Obsidian, LogSeq, etc., but are dissatisfied with the existing note-taking scheme:
- Complex configuration. Obsidian-Zotero-based literature notes require multiple plug-ins and related settings to be configured in two software, which is costly to learn
- Unaccustomed to operation. Writing notes in multiple software (e.g. Obsidian + Zotero) requires switching software, which may cause unnecessary mental burden and interference

I launched my first Zotero plugin library in December 2020 (Zotero Tag). At first, it was just a gadget I used to mark unread papers.
Thanks to the Zotero team and community, Zotero 6 brings many new features, and I try to make full use of them to provide a better experience for reading papers.
To help those who are not familiar with the language of the thesis and those who do not have the opportunity to receive formal foreign language training, I have developedZotero PDF TranslateThe software has been widely used by more than 20,000 people around the world;
To simplify notes in Zotero and prevent users from being distracted by jumping between note-taking tools, I have released a knowledge-based note-taking plug-in for ZoteroZotero Better NotesFor collecting, linking, organizing and processing notes and notes in papers;
To make PDF more accessible, I releasedZotero PDF PreviewTo preview the file without extra action or annoying windows.
The Zotero tag plug-in mentioned above provides advanced tag management and operation.
I made my plug-in into a template (https://github.com/windingwind/zotero-addon-template) Helps beginners with Zotero plug-in development.
Sponsor me for a cup of coffee. I spend more than 24 hours a week writing code, debugging and responding to problems in the plug-in library. Plug-ins are open source and completely free.
