Asteria numbers (legacy)

DISCONTINUED

All finding aids published on Asteria have a unique number that is entered in the EAD ID field, as well as used in the EAD file name. Note that the finding aid's Asteria number is sometimes different from the collection number.

If you are updating a finding aid that has already been published on Asteria, you can find its Asteria number by looking at the URL while viewing the finding aid. The Asteria number is the alphanumeric combination immediately following the last slash (/) before .html in the URL.

Example: for the finding aid https://asteria.fivecolleges.edu/findaids/smitharchives/manosca46_main.html, the Asteria number is "manosca46".

Asteria numbers previously consisted of a prefix indicating the collection (manosca for Smith College Archives, mnsss for Sophia Smith Collection, or manoscr for Mortimer Rare Book Collection) followed by a 1-to-3 digit number.

The following two-part system for assigning new Asteria numbers was introduced in October 2018:

  • Part 1: Collection prefix
    • College Archives: ca
    • Sophia Smith Collection: ssc
    • Mortimer Rare Book Collection: mrbc
  • Part 2: Collection number (e.g. 00434)
  • Example Asteria number: mrbc00434

Do not change existing Asteria numbers to fit the new system.
